Surface Float Rig
The surface float is used to present a bait in the top layer of the water and is suitable for mullet, garfish and mackerel. Common names for this style of float are sbirolino and bombarda.
Surface Float Rig Components
Main Body
1 x floating or slow sinking sbirolino or bombarda float
Optional split shot
2 x small swivel
1 x bead
1 x link
1 x 500mm 15Â – 20lb BS clear nylon
1 x 600 to 1500mm 5 – 12lb BS clear nylon or fluorocarbon, length depends on depth to be fished
1 x 10 to 1 hook; size of hook will depend upon target species and bait size
The Rig Body
- Tie one swivel to the end of the stronger length of monofilament.
- Thread the line through the body of the sbirolino float, with the tube end towards the top. Fine wire tools are available to assist with threading if the line or float are wet.
- Thread on the bead and then tie on the second swivel.
Hook Snood
- Tie the hook to one end of the nylon or fluorocarbon line.
- Tie on a link to the other end.
- Fix the shot if required before attaching the link to the bottom swivel.
Utilising a slow or faster sinking sbirolino float can allow light lures to be cast decent distances while keeping the retrieve high in the water.
