How To Tie A Ray Drift Fishing Rig

The ray drift fishing rig is used in boat fishing to present three baits hard on the bottom to target the various ray species on the drift.

Rig Components

Main Body

Three Down Rig Components

Tubing Boom

1 x Trace Swivel

1 x Bead

1 x Link

Approx. 500 mm 50-60lb BS line. This can be replaced by a French boom.

Main Body

1 x Trace Swivel

2 x 3-way Snood Swivels, crimped trapped swivels can be substituted

Approx. 3 to 5 m length 40-60lb BS mono trace line

Snoods

300 to 500 mm 40-60lb BS nylon mono

3 x 2/0 – 5/0 hooks

The Rig Body

  1. Thread the line through the tubing boom and attach the swivel to the top. Thread on the bead and tie on the link to the other end.
  2. Tie a swivel to the top of the trace, tie a 3-way swivel to other end.
  3. Tie second length of trace body to 3-way swivel and then attach the second 3-way swivel.
  4. Attach mono droppers to free ends of both 3-way swivel and tie on the final snood length for the trailing hook.
  5. Slide on lumi tubing onto top dropper and tie on hook. A stop may be required to keep tubing in place.
  6. Repeat for second dropper and trailing hook.
  7. Attach the trace swivel to the link at the bottom of the boom.
