The beast from the East has made the fishing challenging. As the saying goes when the winds in the east the fish bite least. To an extent this is true at this time of year but there are still good fish around.
At the moment the Fleetwood channel is still producing cod with some good sized plaice at low water. The beaches and Walls remain quiet with most anglers scratching for a few whiting or flatties. But with Spring hopefully just around the corner the fish should be back in numbers.
In these weather conditions and with a couple showing on the pier it is always worth a shot for an early thornback ray. Your bait presentation should survive shredding by the whiting that have now moved out in to deeper water.
Luke Preston enjoyed a cracking day fishing in Morecambe last Sunday with dad Matty. Young Luke landed a dozen plaice over low water. The pick of the bunch was a cracker measuring over 50cm that tipped the scales at a whisker over 3lb. A real chunky prime fish for this time of year. The plaice all came on frozen black lugworm tipped with squid.
Fleetwood and District Angling Club fished their latest match in freezing conditions on the Ferry beach. Despite the low temperatures the sun shone and there were just enough fish to make it tolerable.
Most of the fish were little codling but a couple of decent fish were beached. The better fish were at distance and yellow tails were the top bait.
