Smoothhounds Were Out At North Shore Road

SPAC Aggregate Match 20/2026

by Chas Tibble

Skegness Pier Angling Club (SPAC) held their twenty first aggregate league match of the year at North Shore Road from 5 till 9pm yesterday, with Club members fishing for the Bev Faithfull Memorial Shield in fond memory of our sadly missed SPAC stalwart and Honorary Treasurer. There was a good turnout of 17 anglers, who met a reasonable sea, with a good ripple from the slight SW wind.

Unfortunately neither Coalie nor myself could get to the beach for this one, as we both had prior commitments. So only a couple of photos, with Adie kindly providing the report as follows:

“Fishing was slow to start with, although Garry Hutson, Simon Drayton and Tony Burman each had a hound first cast within five minutes of each other, the rest of the field struggled. Adie didn’t have a bite until an hour and a half in, when he had a tiny 41cm hound pup. Then around high water there was a smattering of hounds, with Simon catching a couple more, Tony & Garry each catching another and Adie finding another four. There were also odd hounds in the low numbers. The wind dropped and the tide picked up, with everyone expecting fish, but to no avail. Then Adie came in very close due to weed at distance, going on to catch more hounds in the last hour at around 50 yards.”

So once again there was no stopping hound magnet Adie, who ran out easy winner with ten hounds for 852cm, winning the Bev Faithfull Shield for the fourth year on the trot. Garry once again had to settle for second place with five hounds this time for 446cm. Russ Parsons only had three hounds, but a 103cm and a 118cm beauty helped put him into third place with 291cm. He also won longest round with the double figure 118cm cracker! Due to the good turnout we also paid out fourth place, with Simon Drayton taking the cash with five fish for 289cm. Flatty whisperer Nathan Hopkins took the longest flatfish prize with a 33cm flounder and Timothy Fearn was top junior on the day with a 29cm bass. The full result was as follows:

1.Adie Cooper – 852cm – 10 hounds

2.Garry Hutson – 446cm – 5 hounds

3.Russ Parsons – 291cm – 3 hounds

4.Simon Drayton – 289cm – 3 hounds, 1 whiting, 1 dab

5.John Spalton – 239cm – 3 hounds, 1 whiting

6.Tony Burman – 211cm – 2 hounds, 1 whiting

7.Arty Akrill – 104cm – 1 hound, 1 dab

8.Kev Martin – 87cm – 1 hound

9.Tony Dunk – 81cm – 1 hound

10.Steve Delmer – 41cm – 1 hound

11.Nathan Hopkins – 33cm – 1 flounder

12.Timothy Fearn (Jnr) – 29cm – 1 bass

13.Chris Allsopp – 23cm – 1 dab

14.Nick Fearn – 12cm – 1 whiting

3 Blanks – not telling!!

Longest Round – Russ Parsons – 118cm hound

Longest Flatfish – Nathan Hopkins – 33cm flounder

So a reasonable match, which may well see the last of the hounds, although we have caught them well into October with the right weather conditions. Well done to those that caught yesterday and commiserations to those that didn’t, despite all your best efforts! A big “thank you” to everyone that turned up to support the match, in particular the long distance travellers. Welcome to Nick and Timothy Fearn who fish with Donington Angling Club and graced us with their presence today for the first time. We hope to see you both again and well done Timothy on beating your dad!! Thanks to Adie for doing the pegging and to Russ for running the match.
