Lee Is Sole Winner at Sandilands

Skegness Pier Angling Club Match 11 – The Dodsworth Cup

by Paul Coulthurst

Skegness Pier Angling Club fished their latest match at Sandilands on Saturday, with sixteen anglers competing for the Dodsworth Cup. Conditions where fine with a strong backwind and a small surf rolling in from the Northeast. The fishing was disappointing with just a few bass dabs, flounders a single turbot and a sole being caught. The beach has recently been refurbished with the extra sand producing many banks and troughs which could also have affected the result.

Winner on the day was the ever improving Lee Williams with four fish for 102cm, well done Lee on your first match win fishing with the club. Lee like most started out at long range looking for the fish but after a couple of casts without a bite he decide to try in close. Here Lee picked up all four of his fish on fresh blow lug and size 2, Arno Hooks on a three hook flapper including a 30cm eel.

In second place was match organiser Russ parsons who started off fishing for a dogfish or hound on the one hook dongle rig cast out to max distance. This produced a decent bass for Russ of 50cm and put him in an early lead. After this Russ didn’t have another bite for two hours so then set out to target bass proper with a large penel baited ragworm tipped with fresh peeler crab closer in. This worked and Russ landed a nice 51cm bass which placing him in a comfortable lead on 101cm and winning the longest round fish prize. However, on the very last cast Lee reeled in a 26cm sole and pipped Russ at the post, winning by the narrowest margin of 1cm.

Third place on 81cm, Adie Cooper with a schoolie bass

In third place was Adie Cooper who fished at long range and with fresh yellowtails tipped with fish and maddies to catch 81cm of fish including a bass, flounder and dab. Then finished off trying for another eel or flatfish at close range but with no luck today.

In fourth was Karl Nangle who fished at distance all match and picked up a dab, flounder and turbot on fresh yellowtails and blow lug for total length of 75cm.

Tracey Cooper fished hard today with Pristine baits but the fish were just not in front of her, Even so she finished in fifth place on 68cm just outside of the prizes.

The rest of the field including some top calibre match anglers all fished hard to find a bite with most catching a couple of flatfish or a schoolie bass close in on fresh worm and maddies. It was a frustrating, tough day with seven anglers blanking.
