Skegness Pier Angling Club fished their latest match at Huttoft on Sunday afternoon. Eighteen anglers fished the match in rough conditions and a light to moderate easterly breeze. Fishing was very slow on the shallow beach with waves breaking up to 70m out on a large sand bar that runs the length of the beach. The bank features breaks and the odd deeper gulley to its land side. It was in these features that anglers found some fish including flounders, school bass and a few turbot.

In joint first place today was Mark Lawson and Karl Nangle. Mark concentrated on the inside of the sand bar casting frozen lug baits into a slight scoured out area of wet sand to his left which he had spotted before the tide came in. Mark had one flounder in the first three hours and picked up another two plus a turbot in the last hour to finish with a total length of 119cm and first place. In contrast Karl fished at long range launching fresh blow lug out on three hook clipped down rigs well past the surf to pick up his four fish; a bass, a flounder, a 44cm eel and a turbot for 119cm and joint first place, also collecting longest round fish prize for his eel.

Karl with his bass and flounder was joint winner on 119cm total length
In second place was Rik Jarvis it was Rik’s first match with the club after three years break, returning to the club and match fishing after helping his wife recover from illness. It was fantastic to see them both at the match today. Rik fished three year old frozen blacks tipped with squid cast just behind the third wave. He caught well landing four decent flounders on the old bait for a total of 103cm and third place – Welcome back Rik.

In third place on 96cm was Dave Shorthouse fishing rag, razor, crab and marsh worm at all ranges. Dave winkled out a 40cm bass, flounder and a Dab best bait for him today as fresh blow lug.

The match stretch looking South. Bright sunshine and rough conditions combined with a small tide made fishing tough
Anglers fishing into the surf or just behind the last wave picked up flounders and turbot but hardly any whiting and no dogfish where present. Bob Foster fishing blow lug right in the surf caught a cracking double shot of a flounder and a 23cm turbot finshing with 3 fish for 76cm and fourth place. Arty Arkrill catching three flounders fishing around 70 m out on fresh blow lug. Adie Cooper had one bite all match and landed a whiting double shot. Russ parsons and Lee Willams had one fish each. The remaining nine anglers blanked or didn’t return a card.

Many thanks to Adie for pegging the beach and to Russ for running the match thanks to Tina and Tracey for the great pictures and to all those travelling to fish the match today from as far as Kettering, Grimsby, Sleaford and Lincoln. The next match is on the 10th May at Chapel Six Marshes and we look forward to seeing you all again then.
