Skegness Pier Angling Club fished their latest match at Sandilands Pumping Station on Saturday. Sixteen anglers fished for the Dave White Cup in warm and at times breezy conditions and minimal weed with a small surf from the Southeast. The match stretch being either side of the pipe as usual at this venue. Sand pumping had appeared to have resumed when the match began to the South of the pipe which was a surprise. However, the main problem was the previous sand replenishment which had shallowed the beach up considerably on the right hand side of the pipe.

Several single smooth hounds were caught on the left of the pipe at relatively short range but those on the right side where all at distance bar two at the end of the match, with many anglers struggling to reach them and blanking in this section. Best fishing came in the first hour with a definite pattern of fish at long range then over high water just odd fish caught at all ranges.

Dave Shorthouse fished small half crab baits cast as far as he could on a dongle rigged single circle hook and found three hounds in the first hour of the match when he was able to clear the shallows and land his baits in towards the low tide gulleys. He added a tiny tope to his card and won the match with 295cm.
Adie Cooper also pegged on the right of the pipe had to pull out the stops and casting as far as possible caught two hounds in the first 20 minutes followed by a cracking 103cm fish winning him longest round prize. Adie used his M4GT match rod and tuned reel to reach the fish and a single hook rig with a tiny penel set up with fresh peeler bait. He finished in second place with 276cm beaten by Dave’s tiny tope pup.

In third place with two smooth hounds was Tony Burman fishing to the left of the pipe. Fishing at range using his X80 caught a hound first cast and then a nothing until in the last hour he added an 88cm hound. Tony was casting his fresh peeler baits just over a tideline which formed by the banks at around 130yards. Tony used slightly larger baits than Dave and Adie but well streamlined with elastic cotton to gain max casting distance.

Lee Williams came in fourth with two hounds on crab and Rick Jarvis also had two for fifth place fishing at medium range on small king prawn baits.
The rest of the field picked up one hound each. Six anglers blanked entirely.

Scott Emm target flatfish and bass on worm close in and was rewarded with a decent sole of 34cm in the last hour of the match which gave him the longest flatfish prize and a great tea.
