Irish Master Angler Boat 2009

by David Proudfoot

Seventy-nine anglers fished this year’s Irish Master Angler boat competition out of Kilmore Quay…

The match was fished at anchor with four sessions over the two days. The competitors rotated their boat position after three hours and percentage points were calcluated from the catches for each rotation. Over seven thousand fish were landed despite some concern about fishing this venue at anchor. In brilliant weather Ireland’s top anglers landed more than thirteen species over the 20cm minimum size.

Because certain species had bag limits applied the entrants had to work hard, chopping and changing rigs to target the available fish. Bait, ragworm and mackerel, was supplied by Martin Kennedy and the team of organisers – all were agreed that it was excellent quality.

Heiko Dreier again ran out winner of the event with a perfect score of 400% just beating fellow maximum scorer Pio Enright on countback.

1st –     Hieko Dryer     400%
2nd –    Pio Enright    400%
3rd –    Dorian White    398.13%
4th –    Liam Longmore    397.09%
5th –    Kit Dunne    388.14%

Heiko will captain the IFSA boat team at the World Championships in Montenegro next year and the rest of the top ten will join those from 2007 and 2008 for a fish off for the remaining places.
