Baitbox Big Cod Open

by David Proudfoot

The HCA Fishing Club has again had to postpone the Big Cod Match due to be held on the second choice date of Sunday 10th February. The Club have decided to err on the safe side given a forecast of ENE winds gusting to 34mph.

The match is re-scheduled for Sunday March 17th with the fishing times change to 10:30a.m. until 6:00p.m to take account of the tides and hopefully the Spring run of cod will have come back into the river. Fingers crossed that the weather will behave this time and permit the anglers to fish this excellent event.

There is still time now to enter the match by downloading the entry form, a full refund is available if you can not make the planned fishing date but refunds will not be sent out until after the match has gone ahead.

Last year 262 anglers fished the event from a total of 94 private and charter boats. This massive event is and organised by the angling section of Humberside Cruising Association. The fishing action in this ‘heaviest single fish’ event was superb in 2012, and, incredibly, a double-figure cod was required to break into the top 20!

Come along with your own boat and pit your wits against the North Sea cod, who knows you may pick up the £1000 first prize. Tackle and bait for this event is fairly simple with no frills Baitbox unwashed squid fished up or across tide proving the winning combination last year. The event is fished from 7am until 2:30pm and tractor launching facilities are provided on Cleethorpes beach.

The entry fee is £15 per angler with an optional £5 pool and further details can be obtained from Tim Burgess – tim.burgess@ntlworld.com or Tony Hogg – tonyhoggwash@googlemail.com

Speaking from personal experience the folks at the Cruising Association will make you feel extremely welcome at this excellent, relaxed event.
