Norwegian Coalfish Adventures

by David Proudfoot

After six years without coalfish of any size or numbers, this August they returned with a vengeance. No matter if the guests of No Problem Fishing Charters choose to fish in the daytime or the twilight hours of a night trip, the line stripping black beauties made their presence felt.

The fishing took place outside of Henningsvaer, 8 miles west of Svolvaer where skipper Nigel Hearn and his crew found good numbers of fish in the 7 to 16.5kg bracket.

A group from Bexhill-on-Sea had great fishing in the daytime with Dave Spooner beating his personal best fish three times, topped off with a super fish of 16.5kg. Bob Tindal returned to beat his personal best fish of 13.5kg from last year with two fish of 15kgs.

Last year, Bob fished with Dave and Linda for eight days for only one double figure fish, which shows the change in this year’s catches.

During one night fishing session, they had a fantastic time with over 200kgs of coalies in 5hrs.

During other bookings, young Dutch angler Tobias landed a fish of 13.5kg while a Swedish guest had one of 14kg on a bright, sunny, day trip. Jason Sillince also beat his personal best by 2.5kg with a 15kg fish.

The anglers enjoyed great sport using 10lb class boat rods and heavy spinning rods with fixed spool reels. The fish fell to 6in shads in blue/white, and blue/silver colours and small pirks of 125gm. The tactics were to wind the lures at top speed all the way to the surface with short stops on the retrieve.
