Norwegian Adventures – December 2012

by David Proudfoot

This week three anglers from Doncaster in Yorkshire came over to visit guide Phill Dale for seven days of shore fishing. With cod the main target for the week, the guests found plenty of rod bending action.

Rob fished over high water at Straumen using an up-tide technique to counter act the current and bag the biggest cod of the week. The 24lb fish, which took a herring bait supplied by Phill, was the best fish in a 15 cod session with many of the others bumping the double figure barrier.

After a five minute recovery period in hand, the released specimen swam strongly away into the depths, a fantastic sight watching the fish in the clear water.

With clear water and settled bright skies the daytime cod fishing can be challenging at this time of year, fortunately haddock, pollock and flatfish provide viable alternative targets. Most visitors at this time of year however turn into vampires and spend their time in nocturnal forays for the week. As soon as the darkness arrives so do the cod, and in Winter the sun is not above the horizon for long.
