More than 200 boat anglers to converge on the Humber…
The M and J Wilson Humber Cod Open takes place this coming Sunday will is see over 200 anglers on the water. It’s one of the biggest boat competitions in the calendar, with 60 boats will launching from Cleethorpes beach and anglers are from all over the UK in attendance. The fishing though has been hit-and-miss and fish numbers are down on previous years. The deep water marks that hold the bigger cod are not producing, and many boats have struggled, so this could be anyone’s match. There will be 30 prizes on offer from the likes of Fox. First prize is £1000 and with pools money it should be a very good payout. The match starts at 10:30 and finishes at 17:30hrs. Fish should be brought back to the HCA social club on the docks. Pie and peas will be provided after the fishing.
The two-day North British Open Beach Championships at Bridlington takes place the following weekend, with over thousand anglers expected. Interestingly, an undisclosed mark threw up a 15lb cod last week. With a pairs match on the Saturday, and the teams event on Sunday there’s lots of opportunities to get among the prizes.
Cleethorpes angler Steve McGregor caught a fine 2.84kg bass in the last Reckitts S.A.C. match. Winner John Levesley had 23 whiting and 2 flats for 9.49kgs, John Atkinson’s bag of 16 flats for 4.40kg took second. Phil Harrison in third had 7 whiting for 2.37kg. Steve’s bass proves there are some good fish about, and they seem to be moving with large herring shoals that are around the coastline at the moment. Mike Brockman was top man in the Premier League event with1 cod and 1 whiting for 3.15kg. Tom Owens was second on 10 flounders for 2.87kg, with Steve McGregor third.
Skegness Pier S.A.C. report by Chas Tibble: Visiting anglers took all the spoils in the latest Skegness Pier Angling Club match at Chapel Point. Holbeach S.A.C. angler Roy Smith coped best with the flat calm conditions, winkling out 3 whiting for a winning weight of 2lb 1oz. His clubmate Adrian Crane took second place with 2 whiting for a 1lb 8oz, including the heaviest round fish of 1lb 1oz. Current match points leader Dave Shorthouse made the journey up from Kettering worthwhile again, taking third place with pair of whiting for 1lb 2oz. S.P.A.C. veteran, Mo Fendyke, took the heaviest flatfish award with a 10oz flounder caught early in the match.

Humber S.A.C. fished the Humber Bank Wall, but there were match-day congestion problems due to the amount of other anglers fishing. However, Adie Cooper kept his head and swept the board with a single fish.
