Skegness Pier Angling Club – July 2013

by Chas Tibble

There was a ding-dong battle for first place in the latest Skegness Pier Angling Club (SPAC) match, held in perfect conditions at Chapel Six Marsh. The match went right down to the wire, with Wrangle’s Alan Steadman catching a bass on his last cast, which added to the 3 flatties he caught earlier, was enough to win him the Shipstone Cup with a total weight of 3lb 15oz. He also won the heaviest round fish prize with the bass, which tipped the scales at 1lb 8oz. Match organiser Chas Tibble had been in front of Alan for most of the match with five flatties, but needed a last cast silver eel to weigh in 3lb 4½oz and grab second place from Croxton’s Dave Burr. Dave very nearly won his fifth SPAC on the trot, but in the end had to settle for third place, with four nice flatties for 3lb 3oz. Skegness local Helen Bradley only caught one fish on this occasion, but her 1lb 6oz specimen flounder was easy winner of the heaviest flatfish award.

Although conditions looked absolutely ideal for catching smoothounds, the hard fighting small sharks were conspicuous by their absence. There are plenty being caught from boats offshore however, so hopefully they will hit local beaches in time for the next SPAC match, which is the annual Lincolnshire Pairs.
