Last weekend it was nice and calm and perfect for the boats to be launched and go in search of different species. The tides were very high and limited where the boats could fish. Around the 2C did seemed to be a popular spot and there were some better sized whiting at this mark. The winter species are now starting to arrive but there are still a few summer fish reluctant to move on. The smoothhounds are still about and Thomas Marshall lost what he described as a huge fish at the side of the boat nearly taking the rod over the gunwhales and into the sea. Boat anglers have had a good variety of fish including thornbacks, whiting, dabs, hounds, and flounders.
There are also a few cod being caught up towards Immingham.
There have already been reports of cod being caught at East Halton off the shore. This mark is usually the first area to hail the arrival of the winter species.
Just half an ounce separated the top two anglers in the latest Skegness Pier Angling Club (S.P.A.C) match held from North Shore Road. Kettering’s Dave Shorthouse was top man again, ending up with three dabs, a flounder and a weever, weighing in at 2lb 3oz. Wrangle’s Alan Steadman had led the match for most of the four hours and was unlucky to only finish second by such a small margin, but made up for it by taking the heaviest round fish prize with a 17cm coalfish. After a long layoff from the S.P.A.C match scene, Skegness local Wayne Sumner returned to the fold in style, taking third place with a four fish catch of 1lb 13oz. Croxton’s Dave Burr left it very late, but came good on his last cast, catching a nice 1lb 4oz flounder to wrest the heaviest flatfish award from the unfortunate Alan Steadman.
Next S.P.A.C match will be held on Saturday 3 Oct from 5:30 till 9:30 pm at Anderby Creek, with Club members fishing for the A Smith Cup.
