Skegness Pier Angling Club match 11 – The Frank Parkins Shield

by Paul Coulthurst

The latest Skegness Pier match was fished last Sunday at Chapel Six Marshes in bright and breezy weather and a choppy sea. A small tide with a strong wind against it meant that there was little current.

As result quantities of fish were down on usual but a good variety of species were caught including bass, flounders, rocking, eels, a codling, a few small turbot and a haddock.

Karl Nangle won the match with 177cm of fish including a decent bass of 4lb 11oz and an eel measuring 67cm (1lb 3oz), which also won him longest round fish prize and put him in the lead for the annual heaviest eel award. Karl used his Penn fathom 12 and the new AFAW match Pro MK2 to sail his baits out into the stiff headwind his winning bait was yellowtails.

Kev Martin was in in second place with 119cm total length of two turbot, an eel of 47cm and a little haddock. Cast 190g fixed grip leads with his classic Zziplex Formula T rod and fixed spool Kev was able to reach the fish on his clipped up match rigs. Most of his fish were on marsh lug and the turbot were on small bluey baits.

In third place was Tony Burman with four fish for 117cm including a turbot and small codling of 43cm, all fish caught on crab. Tony using his Century T800 and Abu TSR to easily reach the fish, presenting small fresh peeler baits and fresh lug.

Tracey Cooper had the longest flatfish prize with a 1lb 1oz flounder at 34cm and came in fifth place with Adie, in fourth, both on 101cm. Tracey has spent time practicing casting and it was definitely working as she is easily keeping up with the majority of the anglers fishing the matches with casting distances.

Many thanks to Adie for pegging the beach and to Russell for running the match plus thanks to Chas and Tina for the great pictures. Also, thanks to those anglers travelling down to fish with the club this weekend. The next match is at Drake Road on Sunday 2nd of June, and we are looking forward to seeing you all there.
