Adie Wins At North Shore

Skegness Pier Angling Club Match 21 - The Bev Faithfull Memorial Shield

by Paul Coulthurst

The latest match in the Skegness Pier Angling Club league was fished on Saturday 28th September at North Shore. Ten anglers fished the match in pleasant weather conditions and an offshore breeze. The sea still had a large rolling swell left over from the previous days Northerly blow up which created turbulent conditions in the first 70 yards and backed off most of the fish.

Distance casting was a huge advantage today with anglers able to reach the calm water beyond the breaking wave catching whiting, dabs, flounders and eels, whilst those casting just behind the surf caught on or two fish or blanked.

Adie Cooper picked up a small eel first cast on a peeler bait but soon switch over to fresh yellowtails tipped with fish when he saw whiting were present. Continuing to fish at long range with a three hook clipped down loop rig he steadily caught fish for three hours of the match but remained biteless in the last hour. Despite this lull in bites, he won the match with 14 fish for a total length of 327cm.

Russell Parsons drew a peg tight in to one of the groynes on the beach at North Shore so had to use his long casting abilities to clear the end of the groyne and find fish in the calm water beyond the surf. He was neck and neck with Aide for the entire match catching whiting up to 40cm and dabs on fresh blacks which he had dug in the morning tipped with small pieces of bluey. Russell started with a two hook rig to gain extra range on the cast but switched over to a three hook clipped down once he found the fish and caught double a triple shot. He finished in second place with 11 fish for 304cm.

The rest of the field caught up to four fish each illustrating how hard the match was, with fresh bait and casting ability of paramount importance to get anywhere near the top three places today. Largest round fish was won by Russ with his 40cm whiting, and Tracey Cooper caught a cracking flounder of 33cm on full razor fish tipped with a white rag fished to take the longest flatfish prize.
