by David Proudfoot

Fly line – A specially designed line for fly fishing, usually around 80 feet long. It supplies the weight needed to cast relatively weightless trace. The fly line may be floating to fish the surface, sinking to get the lures down deep or sinking-tip where most of the line is on the surface but the tip section sinks.
