Drag setting

by David Proudfoot

Drag setting – A drag should be set around 25 to 30% of the breaking strain of the main line. So if using 20lb breaking strain line the drag should be set between 4 and 7lb. To set the drag, run line through the rod from the reel and attach a scale to the end of the line. With the rod at an angle of approximately 45 degrees, rull down on the scale until it reads the appropriate setting then back off the drag on the reel until the line just peels off the spool. If using braid with a lighter leader then base the drag setting on the breaking strain of the leader not the braid main line.
