Whiting Fest At Chapel Point

Skegness Pier Angling Club Match 24 – The St John’s Ambulance Shield

by Paul Coulthurst

Skegness Pier Angling Club fished the latest match at Chapel Point, on Saturday 2nd November. A small turnout due to several conflicting matches saw nine anglers fish for the St John’s Ambulance Shield. Conditions were good with a light south easterly wind, a three foot surf and little weed present. Bites where plentiful today and everyone caught fish with whiting dominating along with dogfish, a flounder, a haddock and a sole recorded.

Garry Hutson fished his usual three hook rigs at long range fish black lug and mackerel tipped baits for the entire match to put together an impressive catch of 37 whiting for a total length of 1104cm to win the match. Gary had over twenty fish by halfway point, slowed over slack water, he continued catching as the ebb picked up and in the last half hour really sped up adding two more treble shots of quality whiting to 37 cm to seal the win. Gary put his win down to tipping off with his “secret” bait; two year old frozen mackerel!

Adie Cooper fishing similar tactics to Gary, fishing sandeel, lug and bluey combinations at range. He started well with eight fish in three casts the slowed down around slack water. He was slightly behind Gary at high water due to three blank casts, possibly due to the “peggy” beach as a result of system of banks and gullies along the match stretch. He tried dropping his cast time down to 10 minutes from 15 minutes to catch up but, this only resulted in single whiting, so he at once reverted to longer cast times and filled up the three hooks once again. However, he was unable to make up the shortfall and hindered by a total of six blank casts during the match finished in second place with 846cm of 26 whiting and two small dogfish.

Jason Harthill after talking to a few club members over earlier matches had tweaked his rigs and made a few improvements to his rig choice and bait quality, he had also brought along a timer, to allow him to fish to the clock. These improvements made a substantial difference and fishing 15 minute casts with a three hook clipped down rig and size 1 Kamasans, baited with fresh lugworm, tipped with a small piece of mackerel he caught double shots of whiting throughout the match. Jason finished in third place with 19 whiting and a haddock for 593cm.

The rest of the anglers all caught whiting into double figure quantities with decent fish around to 42cm being caught at all distances. Mark Bradbury won the longest flatfish prize for a 32 cm sole and Chris Allsopp managed a 51cm dogfish to win the longest round fish prize.

We would like to welcome Lee Williams who fished his first match with the club today along with his son who came along to watch. He did very well with 16 fish for 479cm and seventh place and hopefully we will see you both fishing more matches with us again soon.
