Tees and North East England report
Plaice evident from all areas this year and along with huge numbers of dabs. Anglers bait fishing taking good numbers of different flatfish species including rarer turbot and brill. Ragworm finding most plaice, but fresh mackerel baits have taken the turbot, brill and the bigger dabs. David Burton fished South Shield pier and took a splendid plaice of 3 – 04lb. Mysteriously, Dave later discovered someone had actually whipped the plaice out of his bag when his back was turned.
There are plenty of fish in the middle Tyne with quality flounders and eels from all areas. Upriver marks for bigger flounders, but there are lots of smaller fish being reported. The Wear has been hit-or-miss, but odd bigger flounders reported from here also. The last Ryhope Tuesday sweepstake saw 48 fishing. Gaz Watson won zone A with a flounder of 1 – 06lb, while Jim Dobie and Dave Stoke tied on 1 – 04lb, and Bob Hamilton had 1 – 00lb. In zone B Gary Warwick had 1 – 02lb; Ken Newton had 1 – 00lb, Colin Smith had 0 – 14lb, and John Wilson had 0 – 13lb.
Dogfish appearing in increasing numbers this year with most local venues regularly producing the odd fish. Steetley and Seaham piers, and the Durham beaches seem to be the more productive marks. Increasing numbers of quality whiting also moving inshore on late evening tides. Russ Miller had a dogfish of 2 – 08lb in the last St. Marys A.C. match, together with 12 whiting and 2 dabs for a bag weight of 12 – 04lb. Grant Greenland had 10 whiting for 7 – 06lb, and John Hannon had 10 whiting for 6 – 02lb.
The Northumberland rock edges are fishing well with double figure bags of cod and wrasse showing from all areas when conditions allow. Steve Potts fishing Beadnell took 6 fish for 12 – 06lb in a recent Whitley Bay A.C. match, Gavin Owen had 4 fish for 11 – 07lb, and Ritchie Carr had a fine cod of 7 – 12lb in a 2 fish bag of 10 – 09lb.
The Bob White Memorial match fished at Amble last weekend raised £452 for cancer research. 84 fished with 31 weighing in. The heaviest bag went to Steve Williams with 4 fish for 9 – 01lb from Emblestones. Geoff King in second, had 4 fish for 8 – 04lb from Newton, while third-placed Ken Middlemist had 2 fish for 7 – 15lb from Beadnell. Dave Allinson’s cod of 5 – 10lb taken from Seahouses was the heaviset fish, followed Paul Buddles with 4 – 11lb cod from Boulmer, and Chris Stringer with 4 – 10lb cod, also from Boulmer. Top junior was James Bowstead with a flounder of 0 – 13lb from Warkworth.
