Humberside / Linconshire / Yorkshire – 30/11/10

by David Proudfoot

Last Saturday Humber SAC organised the Lincolnshire Open which was fished behind Fantasy Island at Ingomells. But despite almost ideal conditions there was no fantasy about the fishing as anglers found the fishing tough only catching a couple of fish.

This time of year the Lincolnshire coast should be producing hordes of whiting after dark but unfortunately the fish failed to show in expected numbers. Local tackle shop owner, George Smith was top man landing 12 fish weighing 5lb 6oz. Second place went to Skegness based angler Richard Leighton with eight fish for 3lb 14oz ahead of Kev Bebbington who weighed in a bag of 3lb 4oz. Kev also landed the biggest round fish of the night in the shape of a 43cm whiting while Club Chairman, Nigel Crabtree took the biggest flatfish of the night; a 34cm dab.

The club’s next match is on Saturday Courtaulds Straight on Saturday 27/11/10 fishing 7:30pm – 11:30pmMeet at the gate from 6:15pm.

Also last Saturday the Daiwa Junior Open Championships took place under decent conditions. Tony Ellis from Immingham Pilgrims Club reports that the juniors enjoyed reasonable fishing with most of the 26 entrants managing to bring fish to the measure. The winner Callum Teanby, from Tony’s club had seven fish measuring 140cm while second place went to previous winner Emma Standley with six fish for 124 cm. Third spot went to Alex Robinson who measured five fish at 108 cm. In the Under 11 group, Dan Hooley had four fish measuring 88 cm and the biggest fish was caught by Jay Hanson on his first ever sea fishing trip, a Codling 32 cm. Personal thank you to those members of Commercial SAC in Withernsea and assisted with the stewarding of this event. Well done to Tony Ellis and Paul Power the two sea angling coaches from the club who have a fantastic bunch of youngsters who are very keen and willing to learn.

The senior version of the Diawa Open was fished on the next day where Rob Neales reports that despite atrocious conditions Paul Banks managed to find an excellent 3.185kg cod to lift the £2200 first prize. Runner-up V Lyons picked up £1100 with a 1.635kg bass and third place went to P Costello with a 1.260Kg cod. Only 20 cod and two bass were landed with whiting and flounders making up the rest of the catches.
