Fixed spool

by David Proudfoot

Fixed spool – A style of reel fished under the rod where the spool does not rotate but the line is wound on with a bail arm while the spool oscillates in and out on a shaft. It is also known as a spinning reel. Particularly effective when casting with light line the fixed spool reel is used extensively, but not exclusively, by the shore angler. The drag system may be adjusted either from the front of the spool or from the rear of the reel body. Disengaging the anti-reverse switch allows the angler to backwind giving line without the use of the drag.
