Norwegian Adventures – January 2013 II

by David Proudfoot

Wayne Davison, Justin Owen, Craig Sager and Steve Howard braved seven days of the Norwegian winter this week to get stuck into some good cod action. The lads arrived with a selection of baits, from ragworm to crabs, all safely packed in cool bags and in their cases ready for action.

The group would have neap tides for the week, so we would be concentrating on fishing the popular Straumen area of Skarnsundet that is about a 10min drive from the accommodation.

We were treated to the most amazing natural light display during several of the night sessions. Despite temperatures dropping to -14OC the catches experienced included three double figure cod, more haddock than you could shake a stick at and great sport on the pollock from the pier. Justin had a bonus sea trout while fishing for haddies.

For Craig and Steve it was their first time shore fishing in Norway so Skarnsundet was a great place for them and the lads had some cod and haddock action on the pier in front of the apartments. It makes life easy for the guests when one of the most productive marks just 50 metres away from their beds.

Wayne has visited Skarnsundet ten times to date and he swears by a pulley pennel rig baited with rag, crab, Mackerel or herring. Picking up on Wayne’s experience, Justin had a great haddock session with a dozen quality fish in just two hours.

When the mercury plummets, a roaring fire is a welcome sight to warm frozen extremities.
